PAUL REVERE’S ROW 2004!
For the third year in a row, The Histrionic Academy will be performing in the
Charlestown segment of Paul Revere’s Row.
The ‘Revere Row’ is an annual event reenacting Paul Revere’s row from Boston to
Charlestown on the night of April 18th 1775.
The Charlestown segment is an enjoyable, family-appropriate event, with fife &
drum music, humorous skits, dramatic readings, and presentations by noted local
historians, all capped off with the arrival of Paul Revere! Our Revere is
actually rowed across from
Boston and will take part in a short performance with The Histrionic Academy
upon his arrival.
The Charlestown performances begin at 7pm in the courtyard of Bunker Hill
Pavilion (the National Parks Service Visitor Center outside Gate One of the
Charlestown Navy Yard). The performances are free to the public. Those attending
should plan to dress warmly.
SINCE 2002, The Histrionic Academy has brought history to life through the
medium of the theatre. It is our belief that history belongs to everyone and
should, therefore be accessible to everyone. We believe that learning about
history can and should be an enjoyable experience, and that is how we go about
earning our keep. We have performed at Paul Revere’s Row and Liberty Tree Day,
and will be adding new events to our calendar in the coming months. In season,
we offer tours of Boston’s North End as well as the rest of Boston’s Freedom
Trail.
Where our company name comes from:
‘Play-acting’ was banned in Colonial New England, due to the fact that many of
the lawmakers in New England were Puritans. The strict Puritans viewed the
theatre as sinful and Actors and Actresses amoral. They passed laws aimed at
keeping New England theatre-free. The origin of our company name can be found in
the methods used to circumvent these laws.
To sneak their theatre companies past the Puritans, a few clever managers
announced that they were not, in fact, a theatre,
but a ‘Histrionic Academy’. “We’re not performing a play, sir…” they might say,
“We’re presenting a moral dialogue!”
In 1762, one such ‘Histrionic Academy’ put on the ‘moral dialogue’ of Othello

everything possible to convince the town that what he was
doing was in fact a ‘moral dialogue’ and not a play.
