In Des Moines, gambling is rife in downtown gaming dens, lovers dance the Charleston at the Val Air Ballroom, international spies are murdered in back alleyways, and sophisticated ladies play cut-throat bridge in the evenings while sipping Templeton Rye

The latest fashionable watering hole in Des Moines is a 'gin joint' called Monihan's on the ground floor of the elegant Hotel Savery. Everyone who really is anyone has been seen there - the crème-de-la-crème of Iowa high society. Tonight, a soirée for the elite is being held at the Savery Penthouse on the roof of the hotel.
